يهتم الكتاب بمضمون المقررات التعليمية التي تقدم في مؤسسات الأزهر لما يكون لهذا المضمون من أثر على توجهات وقيم الطلاب الذين يتلقون تعليمهم في الأزهر. ومن المعلوم أن المواد الدراسية المقدمة في المعاهد الأزهرية تنقسم إلى مجموعة المواد الثقافية وتضم مواد مثل الرياضيات والعلوم، أما المجموعة الثانية وتسمى المواد الشرعية، فتضمّ مواد مثل الفقه والسيرة والحديث، وهي المقررات الدراسية التي تميز معاهد التعليم الأزهري. وقد وقع الاختيار في هذا البحث على مادة "الفقه" وذلك لما لها من دور محوري في منظومة التعليم الأزهري من ناحية، ولدورها في تنشئة الطلاب وتكوين رؤاهم ونظرتهم تجاه الموضوعات والقضايا، ومنها علاقتهم مع العالم والمجتمع من حولهم من ناحية أخرى.
فمادة الفقه الإسلامي هي المعنية بتوضيح حكم الشرع الإسلامي في القضايا المختلفة بكل تنوعها وتعقيدها. وقد اقتصر مجال البحث فقط على المرحلة الثانوية. والغرض من هذه الدراسة خلق المناخ المواتي لمراجعة وتحديث مقررات التعليم الأزهري، وذلك عبر تحفيز الرأي العام والمؤسسات المختلفة وعلى رأسها المؤسسة الأزهرية لمناقشة ملاءمة تلك المقررات وما إذا كان من المطلوب إدخال بعض التعديلات عليها، وإتاحة الفرصة للأطراف المعنية لاتخاذ قرارات مبنية على أساس من المعرفة الملموسة.
