تكمن أهمية هذا البحث في أنه يتصدى لدراسة مجال جديد لم تتناوله الدراسات السابقة عن ختان الإناث في مصر، ألا وهو بحث العوامل التي أدت إلى تغير سلوك قرية كاملة تجاه تلك العادة المتأصلة والمنتشرة بشكل واسع في مصر. كما أن البحث من جانب آخر وثيق الصلة بالجدل الذي دار أثناء التسعينات، والذي حاول البعض فيه التواطؤ على عدد من الانتهاكات لحقوق المرأة وبشكل خاص فيما يتعلق بالعنف الأسري، والذي يمثل ختان الإناث أحد أشكاله، وصورت فيه الدعوة لوقف ختان الإناث باعتبارها اعتداء على الخصوصية الثقافية للمجتمعات التي تمارسه.
