إزدهرت في السنوات الأخيرة حركة تحقيق ونشر الرحلات العربية القديمة، كما بدأت عملية ترجمة ونشر الرحلات الأجنبية إلى بلادنا منذ العصور القديمة وحتى القرن التاسع عشر أو بدايات القرن العشرين، أما ترجمة الرحلات الحديثة والحديثة نسبياً فلم تلقى حتى الآن الإهتمام الذي تستحقه، ألا نريد أن نفهم كيف شاهد السائح الأجنبي بلادنا، ماذا أعجبه وماذا لم يعجبه؟ ماذا أدهشه وماذا صدمه؟ ألا يهمنا أن نعرف كيف حدّث أهل بلده عنا وعن بلدنا؟ للإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة من الضروري أن نترجم وننشر وندرس كتب الرحلات الأجنبية الحديثة، وقد تكون سلبية في عيون الآخر، فإن كانت سلبية علينا العمل على تغييرها، وإن كانت إيجابية ولكنها ظهرت سلبية أمام الآخر يجب أن نتعلم كيف نظهرها أمامه أو كيف نشرحها. يأتي كتاب البروفيسور " أيروس بلديسيرا " أستاذ اللغة والآداب العربية في جامعة " كافوسكري " في البندقية المتخصص بالأدب السوري الحديث، الذي نشر في إيطاليا في عام 2007 ليروي ذكريات الكاتب في أواخر الستينات وأوائل السبعينات، خلال رحلاته كسائح طالب إستشراق في منطقتنا العربية. تعتبر الفترة التي يتحدث عنها الكتاب فترة تاريخية هامة في المنطقة: مصر عبد الناصر وهزيمة 1967 لا تزال حاضرة، الأردن قبل شهر من أحداث أيلول الأسود، العراق في عهد الرئيس البكر ونائبه صدام حسين، وكلها أمور شعر بها المؤلف وعبر عنها من خلال أفكار الشاب الرحالة المستعرب الذي كانه.
