حكم النورمان جزي صقلية قرناً من الزمان، ونظراً لقلة اعدادهم وكثرة الأعداء من حولهم، فإنهم إجمالا انتهجوا سياسة تسامح عرقيى دينى ، في فترة كانت الحرب الصليبية فيها على أشدها ، ومع ذلك فإن ملوك النورمان أحسنوا معاملة المسلمين فى الجزيرة لاستمالتهم إليهم، كما اعتمدوا عليهم في جيوشهم وأفادوا من مهارة المسلمين في صقلية في فنون الحرب في حروبهم المستمرة في جبوب إيطاليا، ولذلك فإن ملوك النورمان - في بادئ الأمر على الأقل - قاوما المحاولات التى بذلتها الكنيسة لتنصير المسلمين وحموهم ما استطاعوا من اضطهاد الإقطاعيين من حديثى عهد بالحضارة.
