إن أعظم العبادات التي يقوم بها المسلم بعد إقراره بالعبودية ونطقه بشهادة التوحيد, هو إقام الصلاة التي فرضها الله تعالى على عباده, ولما كانت الصلاة هي أعظم العبادات البدنية التي يتقرب بها المسلم الى ربه, حيث إنها تمثل عمود الإسلام كما أخبر عن ذلك الرسول عليه الصلاة والسلام وذلك بقوله: رأس الأمر الإسلام, وعموده الصلاة- وقد اختلف العلماء في تفسير النصوص الواردة في شأن هذه الصلاة, اختلفوا حول حكم تارك الصلاة كسلاً وتهاوناً, أهو فاسق عاص, أم هو كافر؟ أم لا يقتل؟ وفي الآخرة أهو مخلد في النار, أم هو ناج من التخليد؟ وكذلك اختلفوا حول الصلاة المتروكة عمداً, أيجب قضاؤها أم لا يجب؟. وقد تعرض الكتاب لكافة هذه المسائل والأبحاث مع توسع قليل في البحث الذي يخص قضاء الصلاة المتروكة عمداً.
