يعد كتاب "قلائد المفاخر في غريب عوائد الأوائل والأواخر" الذي ترجمه رفاعة الطهطاوي عن نص فرنسي للعلامة جورج- برنرد دبنج مصدرًا زاخرًا بألفاظ الحضارة في مجالات الحياة المختلفة في عصر النهضة وبدايات اليقظة في مصر في القرن التاسع عشر، وشاهدًا صادقًا على لغة عصره ورحابة صدرها في قبول الجديد.
وهو الكتاب الأول الذي ترجم في الاجتماع أو التاريخ الاجتماعي منذ بدأت حركة الترجمة من اللغات الأجنبية إلى اللغة العربية.
ومن هنا جاءت فكرة إصدار هذه الطبعة الجديدة من "قلائد المفاخر" التي تقوم على تصوير طبعة بولاق 1833، ثم تقديم دراسة تعرف بالكتاب وأهميته وعمل رفاعة المتميز في نقله للقارئ العربي. مع دراسة لألفاظ الحضارة فى مصر للقرن التاسع عشر، رصدت من "قلائد المفاخر" وهي دراسة تنتمي إلى الدراسات التأصيلية للذخيرة اللغوية العربية في العصر الحديث.
