"شمس الظهيرة" العنوان الذي اختاره الناقد صالح بن إبراهيم الحسن ليقدم من خلاله "قراءات نقدية في السرد السعودي" وهو عبارة عن مقالات مضى على بعضها كما يقول المؤلف أكثر من عشرين عاماً، عنيت بالسرد تنظيراً وتطبيقاً، ولأهميتها يقوم المؤلف بجمعها وطرحها على بساط البحث والمناقشة، الهدف منها أن يحقق النص السردي كفاية فنية، يراها أدنى غايات القارىء العادي، فضلاً عن المختص في أي نص سردي، وعليه، اعتبر المؤلف "أن أي نص أدبي فضلاً عن النص السردي يتحتم عليه أن يحقق لقارئه في أدنى مستوياته أموراً ثلاثة؛ أحدهما: الجدوى الفكرية، بما يتضمنه النص من تجربة ناضجة، ورؤية فكرية تغني العقل والوجدان، وتزيد المعرفة بشؤون الحياة. وثانيها: تحقيق المتعة للقارىء بما يتسم به النص من سمات جمالية في المضمون والشكل ... وأمراً ثالثاً يتعلق بمادة النص الأدبي، وأس جواز مروره إلى القارىء؛ وأعني به السلامة اللغوية والأسلوبية التي تحقق الإبانة بجلاء عن مغزى النص ...".
وفي سياق هذه الرؤية النقدية يكتب مؤلف الكتاب عدة مقالات في جوانب النظرية السردية وجاءت في القسم الأول من الكتاب، أما القسم الثاني فيتضمن قراءة في عدد من الأعمال السردية. وجاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "أولاً" في النظرية السردية" ويضم: 1- أدبنا القصصي بين الممكن والواقع، 2- هل يحتاج الإبداع القصصي إلى تعلم؟ 3- اللغة بين الواقع والواقعية في الأدب، 4- الفصحى في الحوار القصصي، 5- كتاب (تقنيات الكتابة) دليل عمل لكتّاب القصة والرواية. أما "ثانياً" فهو "قراءات في النظرية السردية" ويضم قراءة في ثلاثة عشر عملاً روائياً وغيره من القصص القصيرة نذكر منها: 1- قراءة في رواية اللعنة لسلوى دمنهوري، 2- عبده خال وواقعية القاع، 3- لغة السرد في مجموعة (الغريب) لمحمد الشقحاء ... وقراءات أخرى.
