كانت المرأة بالنسبة لنزار قصيدة العمر، أنشودة الوجود، ورحيق الحياة، الذى كان يترشفه لتأخذه نشوة ما بعدها نشوة سرعان ما ينتبه بعدها وفى فمه كلمات ساحرة ترقص لها المشاعر، وتطرب لها الأحاسيس، فحفظ الناس قصائده، وتغنوا بها، واهدوها لمحبيهم!
وهذا الكتاب ما هو إلا رحلة فى وجدان شاعرنا الكبير للوقوف على منزلة ومكانة المراة فى كل مرحلة من مراحل حياته، مع أحلى قصائده المرتبطة بكل مرحلة، منذ ديوانه الأول (قالت لي السمراء) الذى كتبه عام 1944، وكان زلزالا شعريا وديوانا انقلابيا، حيث كسر صورة المرأة الجارية، وحول جسدها من وليمة بدائية، إلى كيان له مشاعر وأحاسيس، حتى آخر ما كتبه قبل رحليه فى عام 1998.
