إن كتاب الفيلم الوثائقي منظّمٌ بحيث يقدم نظرة عامة إلى بعض القضايا الرئيسة ثم ينتقل لمناقشة بعض الأصناف الفرعية. ورغبت خصوصاً في استخدام فئات تتناول مسائل الموضوعية والمناصرة والتحيّز التي لطالما دارت حول الفيلم الوثائقي لكن بزخمٍ متجدد منذ الاختراق الكبير الذي حققه فهرنهايت ٩/١١ (Fahrenheit 9/11) على المستوى الشعبي. ويمكننا أن نختار فئاتٍ أخرى أو نضيفها بكلّ سهولة، مثل الأفلام الموسيقية، والرياضية، وتلك المهتمّة بقضايا العمل والعمال، وأفلام اليوميّات، والأفلام التي تدور حول الطّعام. أمّا أنا فاخترت ما اخترته من فئاتٍ في هذا الكتاب على اعتبار أنها شائعة في سوق الفيلم الوثائقي، ولأنها تثير قضايا مهمة حول الحقيقة وتمثيل الواقع. يسمح لك هذا التنظيم الموضوعي بالدخول إلى الموضوع بسهولة من خلال نوع الفيلم الذي جذبك إليه أولاً، ويتيح لي عقد ارتباطات بين عصور تاريخية وتوضيح الطبيعة المستمرة لما يجري من جدالات جوهرية حول الفيلم الوثائقي. وربما يلحظ أولئك الذين يفضلون التسلسل الزمني المباشر أن كل فصل من فصول الأصناف الفرعية مرتبٌ بتسلسلٍ زمني (باستثناء فصل الدعاية الذي يركز أكثر الأمر على الحرب العالمية الثانية). ولذلك يمكن للمرء بعد قراءة الفصول الأربعة الأولى، التي تحدد القضايا الأساسية وتاريخ الفيلم الوثائقي المبكّر، أن يقرأ الأقسام الأولى من فصول الأصناف الفرعية المتنوعة ثم يعود إلى القسم التالي من كلّ فصل.
