ما من بطريرك في الكنيسة المارونية يحمل اسم "مسعود"، ولكنّه ليس بأسطورة، قصّته حقيقية وشخصيّته ليست من نسج الخيال، لقد عاش في القرن الرابع عشر وحبريّته دامت عشر سنوات، كانت كافية لأن تكون مفصلية في التاريخ الماروني بعد يوحنا مارون بين أواخر القرن السابع ومطلع القرن الثامن وقبل الياس بطرس الحويك في القرن العشرين.
فيوحنا مارون أسّس الكنيسة المارونية، بينما وضع الحويّك أسس دولة لبنان الكبير، ولأنه بين المارونية ولبنان إرتباط وثيق كإرتباط الروح بالجسد أو الحرية بالأرض، كان "مسعود" رمزاً للمقاومة الإيمانية حتى الفداء من أجل بقاء كنيسة الموارنة حرّة على الأرض اللبنانية.
وأما الكتابة عن هذا البطريرك، فهي للتذكير بقصّة راهب ناسك رفعته طهارتُه إلى الكرسي البطريركي ولم يسع إليها، ثمّ قادته قداسته إلى جلجثة الشهادة ولم يتراجع عنها.
إنها قصّة قدّيس من جبل لبنان، قهر بفدائه الظلم والإستبداد وانتصر على أعداء الوطن بقلبه الطاهر وإيمانه العنيد، قَبِل العذاب مدخلاً إلى ملكوت السماوات واجترع كأس الموت راضياً بمشيئة الربّ، فاجتمع الناس حول قبره مردّدين الابانا والسلام وقارئين الفاتحة في أجمل مشهد يفتقده لبنان في هذه الأيّام... فلعلنا نتذكر اليوم شهادَته، لأنّ لا مستقبل لأيّ شعبٍ أو وطنٍ لا ذاكرة له.
