لقد مرت الحضارة الإنسانية عبر تاريخها بثلاث موجات غيرت من شكل الحياة على كوكب الأرض، كانت الموجة الأولى هي الزراعة، فبعد أن هام الإنسان على وجهه في الغابات يأكل ما يسقط من الثمار أو مما يصطاده من الحيوانات دون أن يؤثر في الحياة أو يترك فيها أثراً حضارياً.
جاءت الزراعة لتشكل أول شكل حضاري تعرفه البشرية، ونشأت على ضفاف الأنهار أول الحضارات التي حملت مشعل التنوير، وكانت قوة هذه الحضارات تكمن في الأرض، ثم جاءت الموجة الثانية وهي الصناعة والتي أفرزت شكلاً مختلفاً للحضارة حيث صارت الآلة هي مصدر القوة والثروة وليست الأرض، وأخيراً الموجة الثالثة وهي تكنولوجيا المعلومات والتي أفرزت بدورها شكلاً حضارياً مختلفاً تماماً حيث صارت المعلومة وسرعة وسهولة الحصول عليها هي المصدر للقوة والثروة، ولكن شتان الفرق بين هذا الإختلاف وذاك، فدرجة الإنتقال من مجتمع الصناعة إلى مجتمع المعلوماتية تفوق سابقتها بكثير؛ هذا بالإضافة إلى زيادة عجلة تسارع الإنتقال مقارنةً بين كل موجة والتي تليها، ومع كل ظهور لتكنولوجيا جديدة تجدد الأمال في حل مشاكل البشرية وتحسين ظروفها المعيشية عن المرحلة السابقة لها.
وفي خضم هذا المد التكنولوجي، نجد أن الصورة وهي أكثر وسائط الإتصال إحتواءاً على المعلومات تنتقل هي الأخرى إلى تطبيقات جديدة وتكنولوجيا جديدة وها هو التصوير الرقمي يفتح أفاقاً أرحب وأوسع لتوظيف الصورة الفوتوجرافية في مجالات شتى، مثل النشر الإلكتروني، والحفظ والأرشفة الإلكترونية، ونقل الصورة عبر الشبكات، والدخول بها في عالم معالجة الصورة الرقمية الرحب والذي يسمح للمصور بإنتاج ما يصل إليه خياله عبر إمكانات المزج والدمج والتغيير اللوني، إلى آخر ما يزخر به هذا المجال، بحيث تصبح الصورة الرقمية هي الواقع والمستقبل، لمجال الصورة الفوتوجرافية.
