لم أكتب هذه الرواية إلا لتكون عبرة للقارئ ودرسًا من دروس الحياة، يستفيد من ورائه أبناء وطني العزيز بوجه عام والفلاحون بوجه خاص، والذي دفعني إلى نسج بُردها بالشكل الذي هي فيه هو ما رأيت الفلاح عليه من التعاسة والشقاء، وما هو منغمس فيه من الجهل الدامس؛ حتى إنني جعلت مقر الحادثة قرية من قرى الفلاحين وبطل الرواية واحدًا منهم. ولم يكن غرضي من ذلك أن تكون مجرد فكاهة للفلاح يصرف فيها زمنه على غير طائل، ولكن حكمة بالغة تدفعه إلى تحسين حاله وترقية شأنه، وتبث فيه روح الكمال والفضيلة، فتهديه إلى طريق الرشاد وسواء السبيل.
