يناقش هذا الكتاب صحة الأطفال وكيف يمكن أن يؤدي تعليم العلوم والتفكير العلمي إلى تحسين الصحة، وكيف يمكن للتربية الصحية الإسهام في التفكير العلمي. وهو يركِّز على المهارات المرتبطة بالحياة اليومية: المهارات التي من شأنها إنقاذ الحياة اليومية والتي تدوم مدى الحياة إذا هي دُرّست بعناية. وبعض هذه المهارات مهارات علمية. وتُظهر الأمثلة الكثيرة أن التفكير العلمي لا ينحصر بالضرورة داخل نطاق المختبر بل يجب تطبيقه في مختلف الظروف.
أوراق أنشطة "من طفل إلى طفل" المستخدمة في هذا الكتاب تم إنتاجها بفضل تعاون دولي بين عدد من خبراء التعليم والصحة، وتم اختبارها ميدانياً على مدى عدة سنوات، ثم جرى بعدها مراجعة الأوراق وتحديثها. وهي تستخدم الآن في أكثر من سبعين بلداً بما فيها البلدان العربية. وقد تُرجمت وتم تكييفها لتوائم ظروف الاستعمال المحلي.
أٌعدّ هذا الكتاب ليكون مرجعاً للمسؤولين عن تخطيط وتعليم العلوم للأطفال، وللمدرّسين. وهو لا يركز على الدروس في غرف الدرس، ولا على استعمال اللوح والكتب والأجهزة، بل يناقش القضايا المتعلقة بالصحة في المنزل والمجتمع، ويتحدث عن الأطفال الذين يساعدون أسرهم، وكذلك عن الأطفال الذين يعلمون غيرهم من الأطفال أساليب الوقاية الصحية. وهو بذلك يعبر عن رأي واسع الأفق في التعليم والعلوم، وهو رأي نادت به اليونسكو وشجعته باستمرار.
وينطوي التعليم على مساعدة الآخرين على التعلم. وهناك الكثير من الناس الذين يمكنهم أن يساعدوا، والكثير من الوسائل الكفيلة بالمساعدة على التعلم. أما التعلم فيشتمل على تطوير أساليب التفكير والاستنتاج والبحث عن صورة واضحة للعالم، كما يشتمل أيضاً على تطبيق ما تعلمناه، لكي يتسنى لنا حل المشكلات المهمة التي تواجهنا في حياتنا.
