يعد هذا الكتاب من الأعمال التي تهتم بفئة خاصة من الأطفال المعاقين وهي فئة الإعاقة العقلية، حيث يعرض الكتاب في فصوله الخمس مفهوم التخلف العقلي، التعريف وتاريخ الظاهرة، ثم تناول العوامل المسببة للتخلف العقلي سواء كانت تلك الأسباب وراثية أو بيئية، وبعد ذلك تعرض الكتاب لفئات التخلف العقلي، وتناول بإسهاب أهمية التدخل المبكر بالنسبة للطفل المعاق عقلياً وكيفية مساعدة الأسرة في رعاية طفلها؛ وذلك بتوضيح أهم نقاط التدخل المبكر وأساليبه، ومن خلال ممارسة الأنشطة المختلفة والتي أفرد المؤلف لها ستة كتيبات صغيرة تناولت الآتي: المهارات اللغوية، المهارات الرياضية، المهارات الحركية، المهارات التعبيرية الفنية، مهارات رعاية الذات، سلوكي وأخلاقي. ونأمل أن يسد هذا الكتاب فراغاً كبيراً في المكتبة العربية وأن يكون مرشداً للآباء والأمهات وكل المتعاملين في مجال رعاية الأطفال المعاقين.
