في هذه الرواية يتقمص المؤلف شخصية أحد أبطاله الذين كان قدرهم أن يختلط عندهم الحاضر بالماضي. فهو في أوج مغامراته العاطفية يواجه مفارقات غريبة تدفع به إلى استعادة بعض ذكرياته القديمة والمؤلفة.
ويصور المؤلف ما يعتري الإنسان من مشاعر متناقضة مضطربة. إذ يعكس الحوار الداخلي الذي يجريه البطل مع ذاته، أثر الخوف وعدم الرضا الذي يسيطر على حياته. "متعب أن تتحرك في الظلام وتتحسس من غير أن ترى، أو محاولاً ألا تكشف، كما هو متعب الحفاظ على السر أو الحصول عليه".
رواية للكاتب خابيير مارياس حصدت خمس جوائز خلال عام ونصف بعد نشرها .(لا يفكر أحد قط أنه قد يجد نفسه وامرأة ميتة بين ذراعيه وأنه لن يرى وجهها وإنما سيذكر اسمها .لا يفكر أحد في أن قد يموت في لحظة بعيدة كل البعد عن أن تكون موائمة ،وإن كان ذلك يحدث في كل آن ،ونحسب أن لن يموت قربنا أحد إلا إذا كان موته مرتقباً .فكثيراً ما تخفي الأحداث أو الظروف علينا ...........وقل ما يبقى من كل فرد في هذا الزمن العبثي كالثلج الزلق ،وما أقل نا له من ثبات ,وما أكثر ما يسكت عن هذا القليل ،وما لايسكت عنه يستذكر منه فيما بعد جزء صئيل ولمدة بسيطة :أما نحن فنرحل صوت تلاشينا ببطء لنعبر من فوق متن هذا الزمن أوقفاه حيث لا يستطيع المرء أن يظل مفكراً ،ولا يستطيع أن يظل مودعاً :فوداعاً يا ضحكات ،وداعاً يا منغصات .لن أراكن بعد اليوم ولن تريني ،وداعاً يا عنفوان ،وداعاً يا عنفوان ،وداعاً يا ذكريات .)
روائي وقاص وكاتب تراجم ومترجم اسباني ولد في مدريد عام 1951 وعمل استاذ في جامعة اكسفورد وجامعات الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وجامعات مدريد حاليا .
