في بداية هذه الألفيّة، وبعد حقبةٍ طويلةٍ من الأزمة، حيثُ فقدت الكنيسةُ الكاثوليكيةُ قسطاً كبيراً من نفُوذِها السياسيّ، والثقافيّ والأخلاقيّ، فإنّها تواجهُ مرحلةً دقيقةً جداً في مسيرتها، فالخمسُ والعشرونَ سنة المقبلة ستكونُ حقبةً عصيبةً على المسيحيّين الذين يعُونَ التحديّاتِ العديدةُ التي يواجهونها.
فتناقضُ الكنيسةِ العدديّ في البلدان الغربيّة، وضعفُ نفوذها ومصداقيتها في العالم، سيدفعان بها إلى إعادة النظر في نموذج عملها وحُكمِها الذي كان مصدرَ مجدها وقدرتها، ولكنّهُ فقد فعاليتَهُ.
فهذا الكتاب يَصفُ هذه الحقبةَ المعقَّدة والخطرةَ، ويقترحُ خطَّ سَيرِ لهذه الحقبة التي سيقودُ خلالها خليفتا يوحنّا بولس الثاني مُهمةً بوجهٍ خاصّ، إنه يقترحُ تغييراتٍ ومبادراتٍ ملموسّة.
الحكمُ بطريقةٍ مُغايرة في تشريع التعدُّدية، ومطابقةُ الكلام، والتكلّمُ عن الأخلاقِ بأسلوبٍ مُغاير، والإقلاعُ عن المراسمِ التي عفى عنها الزمن... وبدون خوفٍ من القضايا الحقيقيّة؛ إن هذا الكتاب يتوجَّهُ إلى باباواتِ المستقبلِ طليعتي هذا التجديد، وإلى المسيحيّينَ أنفسهم، الذي لا يُمكنُ أن يتحقَّقَ هذا التجديدُ بدونهم، وإلى غيرِ المسيحتين أيضاً لأنّه، يوفِّرُ لهم المناسبةَ ليهتمّوا بالكنيسةِ من جديد.
