يأتي الفن التشكيلي لتكون إبداعاته بمثابة حقيقة تعبر بصدق عن أحوالنا. ومن هنا.. فإننا إذا تتبعنا وجود المرأة (أو غيابها) في ساحة الفن التشكيلي في هذا البلد العربي أو ذاك، وأمسكنا بهذا الخيط وسرنا معه للتعرف على الطريقة التي عبرت به الفنانة التشكيلية العربية عن ذاتها، سنجد أنفسنا أما إعادة كتابة موضوعية لتاريخ الأقطار العربية، فالمرأة لها باع في إثراء حركة الفن التشكيلي العربي سواء كملهمة أو مبدعة، وأن هذا الوجود ليس ثابتًا أو مطلقًا، إنما يشهد تذبذبات بين الصعود والهبوط. وحيث إن صعود وجود المرأة، كفنانة أو ملهمة، في الوطن العربي يتزامن مع حقب النهضة، بينما يرتبط هبوط وجودها بعصور الانحطاط، وأن محاولة تعليق انزواء دور الفنانة على شماعة موقف علاقة الفن بالإسلام بشكل عام، والتصوير بشكل خاص، محاولة ليست فوق مستوى الجدال. فالإسلام ثابت في كل العصور منذ أكثر من أربعة عشر قرنًا، والعامل الثقافي الإسلامي كان موجودًا عندما ظهرت فنانات لهن قيمة فنية عظيمة في بلاد إسلامية، ولم يمنع وجوده من قيامهن بإبداع ذخائر من تراثنا الفني الجميل. إن دور المرأة كفنانة، وأساليبها في التعبير عن ذاتها، ليس متطابقًا في كل أرجاء العالم العربي، بل إنه يكتسب هوية خاصة في كل إقليم، تأثرًا بالأنساق الثقافية الفرعية، ويضيف المدى الذي يمكن تفسير مثل هذا الفن من خلاله كفن نسائي.
