في مسيرة الحياة، نتعرف على أشخاص كثيرين، منهم من نمر عليهم مرور الكرام، فهم لم يؤثروا فينا، ولم نتأثر بهم، ولم يتركوا في الحياة أثراً يخلدهم بعد رحيلهم، وآخرين نقف أمامهم إجلالاً وإحتراماً، لما قدّموه من إنجازات علمية وفكرية، ساهمت في نمو المعرفة، وإثراء الثقافة، لقد كان هؤلاء القدوة لنا في حياتنا العملية نستلهم منهم الهمة ونستمد منهم القدرة والعزيمة على تحدي الصعاب وإجتياز العقبات.
يُعد أستاذي الدكتور "محمد علي الفرا" من هؤلاء الأشخاص الذين تميزوا بهذه المزايا، فهو عصامي في نشأته، دؤوب مثابر، صاحب فكر وموسوعي المعرفة، حباه الله بذاكرة قوية، يستطيع إستحضارها، فيذكر الكثير من التفاصيل الدقيقة لأحداث الزمان، وخصائص المكان، منذ كان طفلاً وصبياً ويافعاً وكهلاً وشيخاً.
على الرغم من الكتب الكثيرة التي ألفها، والبحوث التي نشرها، إلاّ أن ما يميز هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، إعتماده الكلي - تقريباً - على الذاكرة، ففيه جعل من نفسه شاهداً على زمانه منذ نشأته الأولى في مسقط رأسه - مدينة خان يونس - فوصف الحياة البسيطة فيها، وسجّل الأحداث الخطيرة التي شهدتها فلسطين آنذاك، من ثورات وحروب والتي انتهت بنكبة عام 1948م.
وبالأسلوب نفسه، كتب عن البلاد التي أقام فيها، سواء كان للدراسة أو العمل - كمصر والسعودية والكويت وبريطانيا فصوّر لنا - على شكل مشاهد حيّة - مظاهر الحياة المتعددة في تلك الأقطار في القرن الماضي، وذكر أهم الأحداث التي شهدتها، ووصف ملامح مجتمعاتها، وأنماط حياتها، وما حدث فيها من تطورات وتغيرات، مما يجعل من كتابه مرجعاً قيماً لمن يريد التعرف على أحوال تلك البلاد آنذاك.
ربما كان من المزايا الأخرى لهذا الكتاب نجاح المؤلف في المزج بين الأسلوب القصصي الشيّق، والمنهج العلمي والموضوعي في ذكره للأحداث وتحليلها، مما يجذب القارئ إليه، ويجعله يقبل على قراءته.
يمثل هذا الكتاب، لمن هم في جيلي - حقبة من التاريخ عاصرنا معظمها، وتذكرنا بماضٍ جميل، نتوق له، ونشعر بالحنين إليه، وهو يبين معالم الطريق لهذا الجيل المتخبط التائه، الذي فقد بوصلة التعرف على تاريخه وهويته، وفي الوقت نفسه، فإن هذا الكتاب يبعث فينا الأمل، في زمن نحن بحاجة فيه إلى الأمل، إذ لا حياة بلا أمل، ولا أمل بلا حياة.
