يأخذنا إيلي حداد في كتابه في رحلة ممتعة وشيّقة إلى مدن مختلفة، برلين، فيلادلفيا، نيويورك، بروكسل وبيروت، رحلة تجمع فنوناً متعددة ومعارف نظرية مختلفة في بوتقة العمارة، التي هي أم الفنون.
الكاتب يرحل إلى مدن بعيدة كي يعود بحكاياتها، قلت يعود، لأن هذه الرحلة تبدأ في زنزانة سجن في فيلادفيا حيث يفاجأ الكاتب بصورة الياس الصوري، اللبناني السجين / المخطوف الذي اختفى خلال الحرب، وتنتهي في بيروت التي تحولت من مدينة متوسطية ذات طابع أفقي إلى مدينة عمودية.
بيروت "الأثر" (oeuvre) تغيب لمصلحة المدينة المنتج، الأثر حصيلة تراكم تاريخي صنع إيقاعات المدن وجماليات روحها، أما المنتج فتركيب حداثي يخضع المدينة لمنطق السوق ويدمّر روحها.
يشكل هذا التمييز الذي تبنّاه المؤلف من هنري لوفافر مدخلاً لقراءة العمارة والتنظيم المدني بشكل خلّاق، فالكتاب لم يكتفِ بالكتابة عن ساحة الشهداء في بيروت، حيث أعدم العثمانيون شهداء السادس من أيار، وهي مساحة تم فيها إعدام الأبنية في سياق إعادة الإعمار، بل يأخذنا إلى الأشرفية أو "الجبل الصغير"، حيث نجح الرأسمال الفالت من عقاله بإجتياح هذا الحي البيروتي وسحق معالمه، وتشويهه تبريجاً. - (من مقدمة إلياس خوري)
د. إيلي حداد حائز شهادة دكتوراه في العمارة من جامعة بنسلفانيا في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية حيث أنجز أطروحة دكتوراه عن العمارة الحديثة وترجمتها في أعمال المعماري هنري فان دي فلده، بدأ تعليم العمارة في الجامعة اللبنانية الأميركية في جبيل في العام 1994، وتم تعيينه عميداً لكلية العمارة والتصميم في العام 2012، صدر له "إشكاليات العمارة الحداثية" (دار الفارابي، 2014)، كما ترجم كتاب ألدو روسي "سيرة ذاتية علمية" (دار الفارابي، 2010).
