تشكل الأمثال جانباً مهماً من جوانب الثقافة العربية، وهي من أجمل ألوان الأدب العربي، وتمثل زينة الكلام، ومناط الحكمة، فهي وسيلة من أهم وسائل حفظ التراث الشعبي لأي مجتمع أو أية أمة، وهي ميدانٌ خصبٌ يمثل التقاليد، والعادات، والمفاهيم الصحيحة لمظاهر الحضارة التي تعبر عن مشاعر الناس، وأخلاقهم، وأمانيهم وضروب تفكيرهم، وفهمهم للحياة، وفلسفتها.
ولقد اشتملت الأمثال الشعبية على ضروب من علاقة الإنسان ببيئته ومحيطه، ولأن علاقة الإنسان بالحيوان علاقة قديمة لذا فقد جسدها في أمثاله معبراً بها عن تجاربه في الحياة، ولخص بواسطتها حكمه المكتسبة، فكان نصيب الحيوانات في التراث الشعبي غزيراً ووافراً في الأمثال فقد استخدمها للكناية عمّا يريد إيصاله للآخرين مستخدماً بذلك صفات بعض الحيوانات، والمعرفة بطبيعة الحياة التي يعيشونها وتطبيقها على البشر، فهناك أنواع من الحيوانات اتصفت بصفات ارتبطت بها حتى صارت مضرباً للمثل بتلك الصفات وإن تشبيه الإنسان ببعض الحيوانات في الأمثال قد يكون رمزاً لنوع من السلوك المرغوب أو غير المرغوب فيه.
اشتمل هذا الكتاب على إيراد الحيوانات المذكورة في الأمثال الشعبية معتمداً في ذلك على كتب الأمثال والموروث الشعبي، مع التركيز على الأمثال الشائعة ذات الفائدة، والمغزى، والعبرة، والمناسبة لحياتنا الإجتماعية الحاضرة، والتي تتردد على ألسنة الناس مع البعد عن الأمثال غير المفيدة والغريبة أو التي تتضمن كلمات غير لائقة أو تخدش الحياء.
وقد حرص المؤلف على ذكر الأمثال بلغتها الشعبية العامية الدراجة وتوضيح لمعانيها والمغزى من إطلاقها مع الإحتفاظ بنطق المثل بصوره المختلفة.
