يروي هذا الكتاب قصةَ شكيّةِ دَريدا، التي أثبتت تأثيرها في الأكاديمية الأمريكية. ويلفت الانتباه إلى الإبتعاد الأكثر تأثيراً لدَريدا عن طريقته الصارمة في الشك في كل شيء: النبرة التنبؤية التي اتخذها عندما أثار الخصائص الثورية للكتابة أو، في سنوات لاحقة، [الخصائص الثورية] للعدالة. كانت هذه النبرة محاولة للوصول خارج حدود الشكية، لإعلان ظهور عالَم لن يكون لغوياً فقط. عندما مارس الإرتياب الشكي، ابتعد دَريدا عن النفس البشرية، التي شغلَ تعقيدُها الغنيّ الفلاسفةَ من أفلاطون إلى اوستن. وسيكون رفضه لعلم النفس ثيمة هامة في هذا الكتاب. عندما أصبح دَريدا غير راضٍ عن المذهب الشكّي، فقد أدرك أيضاً بأن فكره أصبح مخلخلاً وبعيداً عن الواقعية. كان بحاجة إلى دافع جديد، إلى شيء يعيد ربطه بعصره و بواقعه. ووجد هذا التصميم الجديد ليس عن طريق إشغال نفسه بالأفراد، وبدوافعهم وبتواريخ حيواتهم بل من خلال إعلان أخلاق يمكن أن تسمو فوق علم النفس وتواجه الإنسانية بأشدّ الأبعاد وأكثرها إلحاحاً. لقد أصبح دَريدا صوتاً للعدالة. واعتمد على هذا التحوّل لاستبعاد حالات النفس التي كان مصمماً على تجنّبها منذ بداية مسيرته. لكن فلسفة عارضتْ بشدة علم النفس تدمّر عنصر إقناعها؛ فهي ترفض أكثرَ علاماتِ وجودنا وضوحاً، ألا وهي حياتنا الداخلية. كما أن إنكار دَريدا لعلم النفس هو إنكار للسيرة الذاتية. لكن فكره، برغم كل هذا، هو فكر شخصي جداً: فالوجود الذهني لدى المفكر لا يمكن عزله عن حياته العاطفية. لهذا يقدّم هذا الكتاب تقريراً عن حياة دَريدا، فضلاً عن فكره – وخاصة تعلّقه الشديد بصديقه بول دي مان، مصدر أعظم زلة وصدمة مهنية لدى دَريدا.
