اليوم تعد مشكلة البيئة من أخطر المشاكل التي تواجه الحياة البشرية، ولا شك في أن للتطور التكنولوجي سلبيات كما أن له ايجابيات، لانه قد أحدث الى جانب الخدمات التي يقدمها للانسانية أضراراً لمحيطه بسبب الغازات التي يتم انبعاثها في الجو، والنفايات التي يتم القاؤها في الانهار والبحار... وكل ﻫﺫا تسبب في اضطراب المناخ والسلاسل الغذائية. ففي ظلّ المتغيّرات البيئية العالمية الناجمة عن أنشطة بشرية أو كوارث طبيعية، والتي تصدّرت قائمة إهتمامات المجتمع العالمي، وأضحت ضمن قضايا دولية مهمّة أخرى، كالديمقراطية، وحقوق الإنسان، ومكافحة الإرهاب، هنالك طروحات مختلفة لخبراء البيئة حول الترابط بين التغيّر المناخي والنزاعات، منها ما يثير الشك والتساؤل عما إذا كانت النماذج التي طرحتها الهيئة الحكومية الدولية لبرنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة (في تقاريرها حول تغيَر المناخ وتداعياته المختلفة) تعكس واقع هذه المتغيَرات الحقيقي، ومنها ما يؤكّد حقيقة الواقع البيئي الخطير في العالم، وأن استمرارية هذا التدهور البيئي سوف تؤدّي إلى تهديد الأمن والسلم الدوليين
