يضم هذا الكتاب قصائد هي مختارات من أعمال أشهر الشعراء الأفارقة الأمريكان وهو الشاعر "إي أثيلبرت ميلر" اختارتها لنا "وصال العلاق" ونقلتها إلى العربية وهي تضم أعمال ميلر الشعرية للفترة 1986-2009. وهي في مجموعها ذات أفق إنساني شامل في أجوائها ونبرتها وتناصها توحي إلى الكثير من الديانات والحضارات، والتقاليد والمعتقدات التي تنتمي إلى البشر جميعاً، وفي العديد من أزمنة العالم وأمكنته.
يمكن القول أن قصائد ميلر تعكس في جانب منها تلك التغيرات التي أخذت تتبلور في وعي الأفارقة الأمريكان عند مفترق تاريخي هام هو ستينات القرن الماضي وفي ذلك يقول ميلر "إن لحركة الأدب الأسود صلة مباشرة بالمعايير النظرية التي تحسدها معتقدات "القوة السوداء". لهذا تكاد تكون قصائد ميلر عامة توثيقاً لسيرة حياته ولا سيما ماثيير أحاسيسه وشحونه وهمومه فيما يتصل لمسألة الهوية والجذور. ما أضفى متميزاً لأعماله الأديبة. يقول في قصيدة بعنوان [بنما] في أوائل العشرنيات: جاء قارب بأبي إلى أمريكا/ وقد عبر عن انطباعاته الأولى بالإسبانية/ وبمرور السنين، وعندما نس اللغة/ لم يعد يذكر ما كان قد رآه حينها.
