للجمع والطرح أهمية كبرى في النمو العقلي المعرفي، فهاتان العمليتان مهمتان في الحياة العملية، فلغة الأرقام أدق لغة للتفاهم، والجمع والطرح هما الترجمة العقلية الأولى لهذه اللغة، وكثيراً ما يعاني الدارسون من صعوبة الرياضيات بصفة عامة، وتبدأ الصعوبة منذ أن يبدأ الطفل في تعلم الجمع والطرح إذ هي العملية الأولى التي يتعلمها الصغار بعد حفظ الأرقام وإتقان كتابتها، ولا يخفى ما لهاتين العمليتين من أهمية في حياتنا، فبهما نحسب أموالنا ونضبط مواعيدنا، وبهما نشتري ونبيع، ونستطيع أن نخدم مجتمعنا، وأن نتعامل بسهولة مع المواقف الحياتية، كما أن إتقانهما يزيد من ثقتنا بأنفسنا وإمكانياتنا ومهاراتنا.
وتبنى على مهارتي الجمع والطرح مهارتا الضرب والقسمة، وعملية الجمع في جوهرها إضافة أشياء متشابهة بعضها إلى بعض والحصول على المجموع الكلي، وعكس ذلك في عملية الشرح.
ونحن حين نعلم الطفل - في هذا الإصدار - عمليتي الجمع والطرح ندمج بين الأشياء المشخصة والرموز المجردة، فتجد الرقم (4) مثلاً وبجواره رسم لأربعة أشياء ليربط الطفل بين الرقم المجرد والشيء الظاهر أمامه، فنساعده بذلك في إستيعاب مفاهيم الجمع والطرح وعدم نسيانها.
وقد اخترنا هذه الأشياء من بيئة الطفل المحيطة به، وتزداد سرعته وإتقانه لهاتين المهارتين كلما انتقل من تمرين لآخر في هذا الكتاب.
