هذا الكتاب هو مختصر كتاب "الحج الفريضة الخامسة" للدكتور علي شريعتي، لا يتحدث عن أبواب الفقه، لكنه أطروحة تدعو إلى التفكير، وكل ما يفسّر ويشرح حقيقة المناسك من الناحية الروحية، ويبيّن الغاية منها.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب تدعو المؤلفة حياة شمس الدين كل من يريد أن يقوم بأداء هذه الفريضة أن يقرأه، ذلك أن الدكتور علي شريعتي هو بالإضافة إلى أنه رجل دين وسياسة هو عالم متخصص في علم الإجتماع وفي التاريخ، وقد أوجد منهجاً جديداً لمعرفة الدين، ويقول في هذا: إذا قارنا اليوم ما يدعو له الدين وما يطبّق في الواقع، لوجدنا أن التناقض والتضاد بين الممارسة الفعلية، وبين الأهداف التي أرادها الله ..." . وعن فريضة الحج يقول: "وأما الحج فقد أصبح مجرد طقوس لا معنى لها ولا منطق، ولو أُتيح لهذه الملايين من الحجاج أن يستفيوا من هذا الإجتماع العظيم لجعلوا من هذه الفريضة عاملاً مهماً من عوامل وحدة المسلمين". وبهذا المعنى يريد شريعتي التأمل في معنى شعائر الحج، وإدراك مقاصده، وخاصة بالنسبة لوحدة المسلمين وتقرير مصيرهم ...
في ضوء ما سبق يتتبع الكتاب الخطوات التي تقود إلى أداء فريضة الحج من منطلق روحاني شفاف بدءاً من "التوجه إلى مكة"، "النية" ، "الصلاة عند الميقات" ، "محظورات الإحرام" ، "الكعبة" ، "الطواف" ، "البيعة والبحر الأسود" ، "مقام إبراهيم" ، "بينة الطواف والسعي" ، "التقصير" ، "الحج الأكبر" ، "عرفات" ، "المشعر" ، "مِنى" ، "رمي الجمرات" ، "القربان - التضحية" ، (...) ، "العيد". تلك تشكل عناوين الكتاب ورؤية علي شريعتي لفريضة الحج، وهي رؤية لا تنفصل عما جاء في رسالة الإسلام ومصدرها الأساس "القرآن الكريم".
