عندما صدر كتاب "مذكرات ثقافة تحتضر" للناقد غالي شكري عام 1970 كان يتضمن حوارًا مثيرًا مع الكاتب الروائي الصحفي فتحي غانم، وبدأ غالي وصفو لغانم كما يلي: "في مخيلتي كان له وجهان، أحدهما لتلك الشخصية الهادئة التي تلوح لي كثيرًا في أسلوبه وتعبيراته وموضوعاته التي تكاد في همسها أن تصل إلى حدود المونولوج الداخلي، فلم أره يومًا في معركة حادة من معارك الفكر أو الأدب أو السياسة، حتى خلافاته مع الآخرين يكسوها هذا الهدوء الشفاف لا تصل إلى مستوى "الحوار" إلا في القليل النادر، فمعظم صراعاته - إن وُجدت – من طرف واحد لا يشتبك إلا مع كل ما هو عام ومجرد، اشتباكات أقرب ما تكون إلى لغة الاحتجاج المهذب، والتحفظ الوقور، وهي لغة تحيطه بسياج قوي سميج يحول بينه وبين التلاحم المباشر أو الاحتدام العنيف"
