كتب أفلاطون محاوراته في سياق تاريخي واستخدم فيها شخصيات وأحداثاً تاريخية ومع ذلك لا يمكن القول بأنها تاريخ. إنها محاورات فلسفية حافلة بأرقى درجات الجدل ومعبرة عن ثقافة واسعة وموهبة كبيرة لدى مؤلفها، كما استخدم أفلاطون الأسطورة من أجل الرمز.
ومع أن أفلاطون كان يصنع الأسطورة داخل المحاورة بنفسه إلا أنه كان يحافظ على الآلهة اليونانية بشخصياتها وأسمائها كما يحافظ على الأدوار والوظائف التي كانت تؤديها هذه الآلهة في الأساطير اليونانية.
وسوف أحاول في هذا العمل أن أتتبع استخدام أفلاطون للتاريخ والأسطورة من خلال محاوراته وكيف وظفهما لخدمة أغراض فلسفة عديدة. وسوف أعتمد في تحليل التاريخ والأسطورة على النص الأصلي لأفلاطون على أن أختار المحاورة فأقدم موجزاً لموضوعها والهدف من كتابتها والنتيجة التي أراد أفلاطون أن يتوصل إليها من وراء تأليفها حتى يتضح للقارئ العلاقة بين التاريخ والأسطورة وبين المحاورة موضوع البحث.
