من النادر أن نجد تطور الفن والحضارة معاً وبصورة ضخمة مثلما نجده في مصر، فهناك على ضفاف النيل، نشأت وتطور أعظم وأقدم الحضارات في تاريخ البشرية على الإطلاق، فشواهد هذه الحضارة التي يرجع تاريخها إلى أكثر من 5000 عام تجذب مئات الآلاف من السائحين كل عام.
وكتابنا هذا يأخذ القارىء في جولة إرشادية عبر مصر كلها، فهو يرافقه إلى أجمل وأشهر أماكن مصر القديمة، في الإسكندرية إلى الجيزة، وعلى امتداد النيل إلى أعماق الجنوب حتى الأقصر وأسوان وأبي السبل، كما يقوم الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا بشرح مبسط لأهم الأعمال الفنية، ووصف للتماثيل الضخمة وأعمال النحت البارز، وكذلك الرسم على الحوائط والجدران.
وينقسم الكتاب أربعة فصول مرتبة ترتيباً زمنياً، فالفصل الأول يبدأ بوصف تفصيلي للآثار والفن المصري القديم. ثم يليه الفصل الثاني ليقدم الآثار في العصر اليوناني الروماني، ثم يأتي الفصل الثالث ليستعرض أهم سمات الفن القبطي، وأخيراً يجيء الفصل الرابع مبرزاً الآثار الإسلامية بالقاهرة، وأهم سمات الفن الإسلامي. وقد عني كل فصل من هذه الفصول بتوضيح أهم المميزات الفنية والمعمارية للعصر الذي يتعرض له، مع توضيح ذلك من خلال شرح لأهم الآثار التي تمثل هذا الفن.
كما وعني بترجمة جميع النصوص الواردة في الكتاب إلى اللغة الألمانية حتى يتسنى للقارئ فهم ومتابعة المعلومات الوافرة والقيمة الواردة فيه.
