يضم كتاب شوكا سابتاتي مجموعة قصص وأساطير كتبت أصلاً باللغة السنسكريتية، حيث تتخذ أبطالها من البشر والجن، ثم تُنطق الحيوانات فتروي القصص والأمثال. وتتطاول حكاياته لتروي حياة الملوك ثم تتهاوى لتحكي عن قاع المجتمع. ومع أن بعضهم يحذرون منه لتضمنه ألفاظاً وقصصاً ماجنة، لكنه ظل واحداً من أكثر الأعمال الأدبية شهرة وشعبية في الهند. وبالمقابل يعتقد كثيرون بأن قراءة الكتاب كانت تجربة رائعة، لامتيازه بإيجاز العرض وفجائية تطور الحدث ودهشة النهايات، ولما يتضمنه من أحداث مشوقة امتزجت فيها الحقيقة بالخيال، مما يجعل المتلقي يعيش زمن المعجزات في حيز من اللازمان. كل ذلك جاء على لسان ببغاء فصيح يقص على سيدته حكاية في كل ليلة ليردعها عما تعتزمه من خيانة لزوجها الغائب، مما دعى لتسميته ألف ليلة الهندية.
وبالرغم من أن الكتاب يطوف بنا خلال حكاياته متجولاً عبر بلدان الشرق الواسعة من الصين إلى اليمن والأناضول وما بينهما، فيوثق بعفوية للظروف الاجتماعية القديمة التي عاشتها تلك البلدان، لكننا في النهاية نجد أن رواياته هي ابنة حقيقية لبيئة الهند في العصور الوسطى، حيث كان الإسلام والثقافة الإسلامية من الجيران الأقربين لها.
