جلس برم إلى الطاولة الوحيدة في البيت، وانكب على تصحيح أوراق امتحان طلابه. كانت الطاولة المصنوعة من أعواد القصب الرفيعة، ضعيفة ومتخلعة وتتأرجح كلما أتى بحركة. وكان يعرف تمام المعرفة أنه لو جلس على الأرض لشعر براحة أكبر، إلا أنه كان يشعر بأن جلوسه إلى الطاولة يمنحه شعوراً بالوقار والمهابة. فألم يكن والده يجلس إلى الطاولة دائماً عندما كان يصحح أوراق طلابه؟ وبالطبع لم تكن مسألة الوقار والمهابة منطقية جداً هنا، وخاصة أنه لن تسنح لأي طالب من طلابه الفرصة لأن يراه وهو متربع على الأرض. إلا أن ذلك كان يمنحه شعوراً بأنه سيكون في حال أفضل بعد ذلك، عندما يواجه طلابه ويوزع عليهم أوراقهم الصحيحة. وبما أنه كان يعجز عن فرض النظام على طلابه وإشاعة الهدوء في غرفة صفه، فدق كان يخشاهم بعض الشيء لذلك كان بحاجة إلى أن يمنح نفسه دعماً أخلاقياً.
رب الأسرة: وفق كتب التراث هناك ثلاث مراحل في حياة الرجل: الأولى عندما يكون طفلاً، والثانية عندما يصبح طالباً، ومن ثم تأتي المرحلة التي يصبح فيها رب أسرة، حيث يتعين عليه أن يعيل أسرة ويلبي احتياجاتها. هذه الرواية الذهنية التي لا تخلو من المواقف الطريفة تحكي قصة برم، المعلم الشاب الذي وجد نفسه فجأة وقد أصبح رب أسرة يواجه مسؤوليات تثير حيرته وتربكه.
