نشأت الموسيقى مع الإنسان منذ وجد. فهي من فطرته نبعت، ومن غريزته نبتت. فهو إما حزين فينوح، وإما فرح فيترنم ويبوح، يرتل جذلًا ويرقص مرحًا. فهي من أقدم الفنون وأدناها إلى طبع البشر إذ تعتمد على الصوت وتحركه في مسرى الهواء. ثم لم تلبث أن صحبتها الآلات من نافحة وضاربة ونافرة، كالمزمار والقيثارة والدف. وفي الشرق منبع الأديان والعلوم والفنون، نشأت.
وفي هذا المقام قد أتحدث إلى القارئ عما أخذت في الموسيقى الشرقية، والغناء الشرقي الصميم القديم، وما قضيت من سهرات تفوق الحصر أسمع فيها شيوخ الغناء وفحوله، أو أسمع، وأطنب وأفيض فأقول وأقول، ولكن ما بنا حاجة وحسبنا بهذه اللمعة إشارة إلى أننا إذا تكلمنا عن الموسيقى والغناء الشرقي منه والجديد، في هذا الكتاب وتعرضنا لتصنيف فصوله، فلا نعد من الأدعياء، أو الفضوليين الدخلاء، أو الجاهلين يخبطون خبط عشواء.
