جاء سقوط بغداد عاصمة الخلافة العباسية سنة 656هـ حدثاً مروعاً هز نفوس المسلمين وإن لم يكن ذلك أمراً مفاجئاً، فالتهديد المغولي المبكر للمدينة العريقة بدأ منذ عهد الخليفة الناصر واستمر في عهد خلفائه حتي إنها تعرضت مرات عديدة للهجوم في عهد المستنصر بالله وحده.
ولقد حاول الخليفة العباسي الأخير المستعصم بالله أن يعالج الأمر بطريقة مختلفة فأرسل سفارة من لدنه إلي قراقورم عاصمة المغول لتشارك في حفل تتويج الخاقان الأعظم كيوك (644: 646هـ) غير انها تعرضت للإهانة والسب تماماً مثلما حدث لسفير طائفة الإسماعيلية الذي كان قد حضر إلي هناك لنفس الغرض.
ولم يستطع هذا الخليفة العاجز رأب الصدع داخل إدارة دولته، أو وقف الصراع الذي شب بين ابنه الأمير أبى بكر وقائد جيوشه الدوادار الصغير، وأستاذ دار الخلافة ابن الجوزى من ناحية والوزير الشيعى ابن العلقمي وأنصاره من ناحية أخرى.
ولم يحسن الخليفة إعداد جنده أو حتي التفاوض مع عدوه هولاكو حتي آل الأمر إلي محاصرة بغداد ثم استسلامه وقتله علي يد المغول في 14 صفر سنة 656هـ وبالتالي سقوط الخلافة العباسية وانتهاء أمرها في بغداد.
ولم يكن هذا السقوط هو نهاية المطاف فقد قام هولاكو بتنظيم إدارة بغداد وجعل علي رأسها ابن العلقمي الوزير وأنصاره، وأصبحت بذلك مجرد جزء ضئيل من إيلخانية المغول في إيران، بعد أن كانت العاصمة الأولي للمسلمين في المشرق الإسلامي كله.
وأخيراً- فقد اخترت- وفقاً للمساحة المسموح بها للنشر أن أتحدث عن هذا الموضوع من خلال ثلاثة فصول فقط تبدأ من تاريخ المغول في عهد جنكيز خان وتنتهي بسقوط بغداد علي أيدي المغول سنة 656هـ/ 1258م وهذه الفصول علي النحو التالي: "المجتمع المغولي، القوى الإسلامية في مواجهة المغول، سقوط بغداد في أيدي المغول"، وقد تتاح فرصة أخرى للحديث عن المغول بعد سقوط بغداد ومدى علاقتهم بالمسلمين في الشرق الإسلامي.
