ذكر عبد الرحمن بن خلدون فى مقدمة تاريخية تحت باب: "الحروب ومذاهب الأمم وترتبيها، أن الحرب أمر طبيعى فى البشر، لا تخلو عنه أمة ولا جيل منذ بدء الخليفة.
ثم يقسم هذه الحروب إلى أربعة أصناف: الصنفان الأولان منها يسميهما حروب بغى وفتنة.
أما الصنفان الأخيران من الحروب، فيسميهما حروب جهاد وعدل وهما:
أ- الحروب التى تجرى غضباً لله ولدينه وهو المسمى فى الشريعة بالجهاد.
ب- الحروب الى تقوم بها الدولة ضد الخارجين عليها والمانعين لطاعتها.
وموضوعنا فى هذه الدراسة، يدخل فى نطاق هذين الصنفين الأخيرين وهما حروب الجهاد والعدل، ويدور حول حياة الحرب والجهاد فى الأندلس وما يتصل بها من إعداد الجيوش وتدريبها وتعبئتها، وتطوير أنواع الأسحلة وأساليب القتال، ووسائل الدفاع والهجوم ، وطرق التجسس، ووسائل الإعلام، وتقوية روح الجنود المعنوية، وذلك على مر العصور الإسلامية فى الأندلس، وأعطيته عنوان: "صور لحياة الحرب والجهاد فى الأندلس".
وقسمته إلى أربعة فصول زمنية:
الأول: من الفتح الإسلامي حتى سقوط الخلافة الأموية ونهاية عصر الطوائف.
والثانى: عصر دولة المرابطين.
والثالث: فى عصر دولة الموحدين.
والرابع والأخير: فى عصر دولة بنى نصر أو بنى الأحمر فى غرناطة.
ولقد تجنبت الكلام عن الأساطيل والقتال البحرى، لأننى سبق لى أن عالجت ذلك فى تصانيف أخرى.
