يتناول الكتاب الذى بين يدى القارئ الكريم -بإيجاز- دور المسلمين فى البحر المتوسط، موضحا بداية هذا الدور، وتطوره، وأثره فى أوضاع عالم هذا البحر المتوسط سياسيآ وعسكريآ واقتصاديآ، فلقد بدأ اهتمامة المسلمين بهذا العالم منذ أن تم لهم فتح بلاد الشام، ثم تعاظم هذا الأهتمام بعد فتحهم مصر فقبرص ثم بلاد المغرب ثم بلاد الأندلس، فباقى جزر هذا البحر وخاصة جزيرتى كريت وصقلية، حيث وجدوا أنفسهم مسئولين عن حماية حدودهم الجديدة المطلة على شرق البحر المتوسط، وعلى سواحله الجنوبية.
ولذلك كان من الأهمية بمكان بالنسبة للدولة الأسلامية تدعيم نفوذها ووجودها فى هذا البحر،لحماية مصالحها السياسية والأقتصادية، وذلك عن طريق تدعيم علاقاتها بالدول المطله على امواه هذا البحر، أو المحافظة على هذة المصالح عن طريق تقوية وجودها الحربى البرى والبحرى فى هذا النطاق من العالم، الذى يقع فى منطقة المركز من الكرة الأرضية أو هو بمثابة القلب للعالم.
وهذه الحقيقة أدركها السياسيون والاستراتيجيون قديما وحديثا وبنوا سياسات دولهم على أساسها، ولهذا دار الصراع بين دول العالم, كل منها تريد أن يكون بيدها مفتاح السيطرة على مقدرات العالم من خلال السيطرة على عالم البحر المتوسط وأمواجه، لذلك حاولت أن أبرز دور السملمين وأثرهم في سياسات ومقدرات عالم البحر المتوسط سياسا وعسكريا وأقتصاديا، وأرجو أن أكون بذلك قد ألقيت بصيصآ من الضوء على جانب من جوانب سياسات عالم الإسلام فى هذا الجزء الهام من العالم.
