أنور محمود زناتي ولد في 20 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 1971 بالقاهرة، كاتب وأكاديمي مصري في مجال التاريخ والحضارة. ويعمل بجامعة عين شمس له كتابات متعددة في مجالات مختلفة مثل صدام الحضارات والاستشراق والإسلام، وتهويد القدس. حائز على جائزة الأستاذ الدكتور عبد الحميد العبادي من الجمعية التاريخية 2005 م، وجائزة الإبداع من السويد 2008 م وعضو الهيئة الاستشارية في دورية كان التاريخية المحكمة ومؤسس الجمعية التاريخية لشباب الباحثين

يعتبر علم التاريخ واتجاهات تفسيره من أكثر القضايا خصوبة فى مجال الدراسات الإنسانية، وقد شيد تحت اسمها مدارس متعددة لتفسير التاريخ ضرب كل فريق منها بسهم ونعى على أنقاضها الكثير منها ناعون، ومازالت تحظى قضية المنهج باهتمام الباحثين وتتعرض لجدل واسع الأرجاء حتى أنها شغلت عدد كبير من المفكرين ومعاهد علمية عريقة، واستنفذت الكثير من مجهودات المؤرخين والفلاسفة.
إن ما تحقق من تقدم فى علم التاريخ ونظرياته يعتبر بحق من أعظم إنجازات الفكر البشرى وخطى خطوات واسعة فى مجال البحث العلمى؛ ودفع ذلك للبحث فى طائفة جديدة من المسائل التاريخية لم تكن مطروقة من قبل، كما دفع إلى وضع مناهج متميزة للمعرفة التاريخية.
ويحاول هذا الكتاب الوقوف على مسارات وطفرات تطور علم التاريخ واتجاهات تفسيره وفى ارهاصاته وتحولاته وانعطافاته والوقوف على أحدث النظريات التى حاولت تفسير التاريخ بطرق مختلفة وبعيدة عن النمطية والتقليد. كما يتعرض الكتاب لعدد من المناهج النقدية الحديثة التى لا غنى لدارس التاريخ –بل وسائر العلوم الإنسانية الأخرى –عنها؛ مثل البنيوية، والتفكيكية، والسيميوطيقا، والظاهراتية، الخ.
