يضم هذا الكتاب أربعاً وثلاثين مقالة اختارها المترجم من قراءاته عبر السنين لطائفة من النقاد البريطانيين والأمريكيين، حيث تغطي رقعة واسعة من الموضوعات ما بين نظر وتطبيق، وتمد شبكتها لتشمل إلى جانب الأدبين الإنجليزي والأمريكي -بؤرتي هذا الكتاب- آداباً أخرى منها: الإيطالي (دانتي) والفرنسي (فولتير) والسويدي (سترندبيرج)، ومنها كتاب "ألف ليلة وليلة" الذي تزهى الثقافة العربية بأنها رعته وحدبت عليه حتى خرج في شكله أو أشكاله الحالية. ويتألف القسم الأوسط من الكتاب من مقالات تطبيقية عن عدد من الآثار الأدبية تمتد من العصور الوسطى إلى قرننا العشرين. من هذه الآثار ما هو أليجوري وما هو قصصي وما هو رومانسي وما هو واقعي وما هو تعبيري وما هو جمالي المنزع، ولكنها جميعاً تلتقي على رسم صورة للإنسان، رجلاً وامرأة، طفلاً وشاباً وشيخاً، في مواقف مختلفة، حرباً وسلماً، صحواً ومطراً. أما القسم الأخير فإنه مخصص لدراسات في تاريخ النقد ومدارسه مع التركيز على مقالة للناقد الأمريكي آيفور ونترز عن المشكلات التي تواجه الناقد الحديث للأدب، وينتهي الكتاب بمقالة للناقد الأمريكي و.ك.ويمزات عن "المدخل الأنطولوجي للنقد".
