يحتل شمس العلماء حسين ألطاف حالي مكانة مرموقة في الأدب الأردي، فهو يعد رائد النقد، وأول من كتب فن السوائح، وأول من دعا إلى التجديد في الشعر قولاً وعملاً، بعد أن درس التراث الشعري القديم فحاول أن يكتب شعراً ونثراً بإسلوب جديد، لكنه متصل بالتراث، ولم يجعل محاولات التجديد تقلعه من جذوره الممتدة عبر تراث الأدب الأصيل سواء الأردي منه أو العربي أو الفارسي. وفي هذا الكتاب يركز المؤلف على نقد الأنماط الشعرية في الأدب الأردي بعد أن أوضح أن التجربة الشعرية في أساسها تجربة لغة، وبيّن أن لغة الشعر هي مكونات جميع الأنماط الشعرية من قصيدة وغزل مثنوي وغيرها، كما أوضح ارتباط هذا الرمز بالخيال والصور والموسيقى وكذلك بالمواقف الإنسانية الأخلاقية، وهذا باختصار هو موضوع كتابه الشعر والشاعرية، ذلك لأن حالي كان يهدف إلى تطوير اللغة الأردية الأدبية من خلال تطوير فن الشعر بجميع أنماطه. ولم يكتف بسرد نظريات جافة بل أكثر من الإستشهادات التي توضح نظريته، مستشهداً أحياناً بالشعر العربي، وأحياناً بالشعر الفارسي ليدعم فكرته في نقد الشعر الأردي.
