هذه المختارات أردناها مقتصرة على مجموعة من القصائد "الشرقية"، إذا صحت مثل هذه التسمية، ضمن الرؤيا الكونية التي يتميز بها شعر باث، إنها القصائد التي كتبها إثر إقامته في الهند واليابان منذ الخمسينات حيث عُيِّن سفيراً لبلاده في نيودلهي، غير أنه قدم إستقالته من منصبه سنة 1968 إحتجاجاً على المجازر التي ارتكبتها حكومة بلاده ضد الطلاب.
لقد عاد الشاعر من تلك الإقامة المطولة مغتنياً بإكتشاف جوهري سوف يشكل منعطفاً بارزاً في مسيرته الشعرية والفكرية، ويتمثل في إطلاعه العميق على البوذية وفي توخي أساليب جديدة للكتابة طبعت مضامينها قصائده كما أثرت في أشكالها، إبتداء من تبني شكل قصيدة الهايكو اليابانية على سبيل المثال.
يمكن القول إن شعر أوكتافيو باث هو "شعر ثقافي" يمسك باللحظة وبالمحسوس، لكنه ينشغل دائماً بفكرة يسوقها؛ ويتمكن من كتابة قصائد ناجحة بأبسط الأفكار.
ذلك أن الفكرة عنده تظل مندغمة في القصيدة ولا يمكن تمييزها إلا عبر الإدراك الشعري، ففي الشعر تنسجم الفكرة والصورة، أو كما يقول باث "في الشعر نسمع الصور".
