إن القصيدة شيء يصنع من اللغة والإيقاعات، ومن معتقدات وهواجس الشاعر والمجتمع. وهي نتاج تاريخ ومجتمع محددين لكن نمط وجودهما في التاريخ متناقض. والقصيدة أداة تنتج تاريخاً مضاداً، على الرغم من أن الشاعر يمكن ألا يقصد هذا. ذلك أن العملية الشعرية تعكس مرور الزمن وتحوله، فالقصيدة لا توقف الزمن، إنما تناقضه وتغير مظهره. وسواء أكان الحديث عن سونيته باروكية، أو ملحمة شعبية، أو خرافة، فداخل حدودها يمر الزمن بشكل مختلف عن الزمن في التاريخ أو في ما يدعى الحياة الواقعية. ويعثر على التناقض بين الشعر والتاريخ في جميع المجتمعات، لكنه لم يتجل بشكل واضح إلا في العصر الحديث. وكانت الاستجابة إلى التناقض بين المجتمع والشعر وفهمه، الموضوع المركزي، وغالباً السري، للشعر منذ المرحلة الرومانسية.
ضمن هذا المدار يأتي كتاب أوكتافيو باث "أطفال الطين" الذي حاول من خلاله أن يصف، من وجهة نظر شاعر أميركي إسباني، الحركة الشعرية الحديثة وعلاقتها المتناقضة مع ما يدعى بـ"الحديث". إنها دراسة تتناول الشعر الحديث من الرومانسية إلى الطليعة.
