يمثل الحجاب الجديد صورة درامية جديدة من المعارك النسوية المربكة في قاهرة متغيرة، غير أن هذا الإحياء للتقاليد يكاد ألا يكون مقصورا على القاهرة أو حتى على مدن العالم النامي. من هنا اختار الكتاب نساء الطبقة المتوسطة الدنيا في القاهرة، اللاتي خرجن من أسرة فقيرة، أغلب أفرادها أميون، و كن أول من عرفن التعليم بين نساء أسرهن، وأول من خرجن إلى العمل. و رصدت دراسة حالة ما اكتنف خروج هؤلاء للتعليم و العمل من ضغوط و قيود و محاولاتهن للتحايل على الضغوط و القيود، احتجاجا و تكيفا، و يرى الكتاب أن تحجبهن يدخل في إطار هذه المحاولات. ولعلنا جميعا، نعلم المستوى الثقافي، لأغلب هؤلاء لا يتيح للكثيرات منهن الاطلاع والبحث, الذي يجعل من اختيارهن للحجاب اختيارا دينيا أو ثقافيا واعيا. و على أية حال، هذا الكتاب محاولة جادة لرصد بعض ملامح التغير في مجتمع القاهرة، والمجتمع المصري بالتالي، و لعلها تحرض باحثين مصريين على ولوج ميادين أصبحت، لأسباب تتعلق إما بالغرض، أو السذاجة، أو قلة الوعي، ميادين شائكة يؤثر الكثيرون البعد عنها التماسا للسلامة، فتكون النتيجة تكريسا لهذا الغرض وتلك السذاجة و قلة الوعي,وإيغالافي عدم فهم الذات و وبالا على حرية البحث و فرصة اللحاق بركب لاحت أمام أعينه مشارف ألفية جديدة.
