فى هذا الكتاب، الذى تعمدت تغيير عنوانه من الجغرافية دعامة التخطيط، إلى الجغرافية والتنمية، عرض وحسن بيان لدور العمل الجغرافى فى الميدان التطبيقى، وهو يشد أزر عمليات التنمية، سواء وهو يضع الأطر التى تحتوى الأقاليم التخطيطية، والكشف عن خصوصية وتفرد كل إقليم تخطيطى، أو وهو يرشد عمليات التنمية الأنسب لخصوصية وتفرد كل إقليم خطيطى، على صعيد الدولة، وما فى وسع الجغرافى أن يغفل ذلك، إلا إذا كان فى وسعه أن يقوم الرؤية الجغرافية الطبيعية, والرؤية الجغرافية البشرية فى المكان والزمان، التقويم الذى يسعف تعظيم قوة فعل الإنسان وتحسين مستوى أدائه فى التعامل مع الأرض، والإنتفاع بها. وتتمثل الإضافة الأهم، فى عرض موضوعى، من أجل حسن توظيف الدراسة الميدانية، لكى تغطى دور الخبرة الجغرافية مرة، وهو يحدد أطر الأقاليم التخطيطية، مرة أخرى، وهو يتدارس الواقع الذى تضيف التنمية إلية شيئاً.
أما عن محتوياته وخطة بحثه فكانت أن بدأ بفصل تمهيدى عن الفكر الجغرافي ومراحل نموه، ويليه خمسة فصول هى: الفصل الأول (الجغرافية وعملية التنمية)، الفصل الثانى (مسارات التنمية وتوجهاتها)، الفصل الثالث (ضوابط التنمية النخططة)، الفصل الرابع (أنماط من التنمية المخططة فى الأقليم)، الفصل الخامس (الجغرافية والدراسات الميدانية لحساب التنمية).
