وقد قسم المؤلف أبوابه على سنة أبواب على النحو التالي: (الباب الأول: في لطائف اليمن الميمون، وحكايات يسر بها كل محزون، الباب الثاني: في لطائف نبغاء الحرمين الشريفين، وحكايات أبهى وأصفى من العين، الباب الثالث: في لطائف بلغاء مصر ومحاسن ظرفاء الشام والعراق، وحكايات ألذ من الضرب في المذاق، الباب الرابع: في لطائف نبهاء الروم والمغرب، وحكايات قلائدها أفخر من سموط المجان، الباب السادس: في لطائف أدباء الهند والعجم، وحكايات يزول بذكرها كل هم وغم).
وقد رأيت إخراج هذا الكتاب لأهمية علم التراجم، وكذلك اشتمال الكتاب على تراجم كثيرة متأخرة لانجدها في كتاب أخر، بالإضافة إلى أن الشرواني في هذا الكتاب قد جمل كتابه بإيراد الكثير من النوادر واللطائف التي نستلهم منها العبرة والعظة واللغة الرصينة.
