لم يتعرض أحد من ملوك بني أيوب للنقد والتجريح من جانب معاصريه واللاحقين، مثلما تعرض له الملك محمد الكامل بن العادل سيف الدين أيوب. ولم يحظ واحد من سلاطين هذه الدولة بالثناء والتقريظ، باستثناء مؤسسها الناصر صلاح الدين، كما حظى الملك الكامل محمد!! والغريب في الأمر أن جانبًا كبيرًا مما امتدح به الكامل، كان في الوقت نفسه عاملًا أساسيًا في قدحه.
رثاه ابن خلكان بقوله: "كان سلطانًا عظيم القدر جميل الذكر محبًا للعلماء متمسكًا بالسنة النبوية، حسن الاعتقاد معاشرًا لأرباب الفضائل، حازمًا في أمره لا يضع الشيء إلا في موضعه من غير إسراف ولا إقتار".
أما ما كان يتصف به الملك الكامل من حب للعلم والعلماء، وسعة الإطلاع، وإلمام كبير بفروع المعرفة الإنسانية، وتنوع الثقافة، فحدث عنه ولا حرج، كما حدث عنه معاصروه، وسوف يكون لنا معه من بعد لقاء حول هذا الجانب، والأثر الكبير الذي تركه ذلك في تشكيل فكره وتكوين شخصيته. وأما ما كان من أمر جهاده ضد الصليبيين، فهذا هو بيت القصيد، والمحور الذي من حوله يدور الجدل وتكثر الأقاويل حول ما الذي فعله الكامل؟ وهل كان مخطئًا أم حالفه الصواب؟
