إن النفس الإنسانيّة هي من الأسرار التي جهد الفلاسفة والعلماء في البحث عن حقيقتها، قال الشيخ أحمد الصاوي: "النفوس سبع بحسب أوصافها وإلّا فهي واحدة: الأولى: النفس الأمَّارة بالسوء: وهي التي لا تأمر صاحبها بخير، فإذا جاهدها صاحبها وخالفها في شهواتها حتى أذعنت لإتّباع الحق وسكنت تحت الأمر التكليفي، ولكنها تغلب صاحبها في أكثر أحوالها ثم ترجع إليه باللوم على ما وقع، سمّيت: لوامة، فإذا أخذ في المجاهدة والكدِّ حتى مالت إلى عالم القدس واستنارت بحيث ألهمت فجورها وتقواها سمُيت: ملهمة، فإذا لزم المجاهدة حتى زالت عنها الشهوات وتبدَّلت الصفات المذمومة بالمحمودة وتخلَّق بالأخلاق الجمالية سمّيت: مطمئنة، فإذا استوى عندها المدح والذم ورضيت بكلِّ ما يقع في الكون من غير إعتراض أصلاً سمُيت: راضية، فإذا فنيت عن الفناء، وخلصت من رؤية الإخلاص، وصارت غريقة في بحار التوحيد، سمُيت: مرضية، فإذا خلّف الدنيا وراء ظهره، ناداه ربه بأحسن مقال؛ لأن صفات الكمال صارت لها طبعاً وسجيَّةً، وتسمى النفس فيه: بالكاملة".
وذهب الإمام الغزالي إلى أن النفس أحد أسماء السِّرّ الإلهي أو اللطيفة النورانية المنفوخة في الإنسان، فهي إن تعلَّقت بالشهوات سمُيت نفساً، وإن استدلَّت بالكون على المكوٍّن سمُيت عقلاً، وإن تطلَّعت إلى معرفة ما وراء الحس سمُيت قلباً، وإن غابت عن شهود الكون بشهود المكوِّن سمُيت روحاً، وإن غابت عن غيبتها سمُيت سرّاً.
وعلى كلُّ ومهما كَثُرت تعاريف النفس، واختلفت المذاهب في حقيقتها، فهي سرٌّ من الأسرار الإلهية التي لا يعرف ماهيِّتها إلا الله تعالى، والإنسان يدرك منها آثارها من محامد الأفعال والأوصاف أو سيِّئها.
