هذا الكتاب محاولة للكشف عن جوانب التأثير التراثي في الأعمال الروائية لجمال الغيطاني، فهي أعمال ذات صبغة "تأصيلية" تسعى لنفي التهمة المزدوجة، القائلة بانسلاخ الرواية العربية عن جذورها البعيدة في الفن القصصي العربي القديم، ومحاكاتها للرواية الغربية، وهي تهمة طالما واجهت الرواية العربية خلال قرن ونصف من الزمن.
ولعل من أهم ما شجعني على بحث هذا الجانب بالتحديد هو ندرة الدراسات العربية ذا تالطابع الشمولي، فباستثناء اطروحة جامعية أعدت في امريكا والمانيا لم تتم ترجمتها بعد، نجد أن ابداع الغيطاني الروائي لم يحظ- حسب علمي- من الدراسات المحبرة بالعربية إلا بمجموعة بحوث ومقالات تتناول أعمال مفردة حسب من بين مجموع أعماله الروائية منشورة في عدد من الدوريات حسب ما نشير إليه قائمة مراجع الكتاب.
إن انعدام الدراسات الشاملة لابداع الغطياني، الجامعة لها بين دفتي كتاب بالعربية، جعلني أكثر حرصاً على الإلمام به من أبعاد التجربة الإبداعية في علاقتها بالتراث، إخلاصاً للبحث، وفي سبيل سد ثغرة سببها ذلك الإنعدام، إلى ذلك سطحية التناول في كثير من البحوث والمقالات تلك، إذا ما استثنينا ابحاثاً على شاكلة بحث قمري البشير: صنعة الشكل الروائي في كتاب التجليات، المنشورة في مجلة فصول،إذ مثله نادر بين تلك البحوث.
