هذه الدراسة تحاول أن تتفهم كلام القدماء في هذا الباب وليس لها غاية أكثر من الاجتهاد في ذلك، وذلك لأنها ترى في كلام القدماء في هذا الباب- وفي غيره- ودائع من حقائق المعرفة لم تستخرج بعد فضلا عن أن نكون قد انتفعنا بها في حياتنا العقلية انتفاعا مثمرا على الوجه المرضى. وهذا الودائع حقائق ماثلة في كثر من نصوص القدماء نراها كما نرى الشئ نستيقنه ثم يكفنا عن استخراجها وتحديد معالمها، ونشر مطاويه ما يكفنا من العجز وضيق الذرع، ونعلم أن هذا باب صعب لم ينهض به في تاريخ العلوم والأمم إلا الأفراد " وإنما يبلغ الإنسان طاقته" وكل الذي استخرجناه في هذا الكتاب وفي غيره مما كتبناه على هذا الأصل المستحكم عندنا ليس إلا وصفا أعجم غير مبين لما نجده من هوادى هذه الحقائق. وإنما نلح في هذه الدراسة وفي غيرها على ضرورة استنبات حقائق المعرفة من كلام القدماء .
