يحوي هذا الكتاب نخباً مختارةً من الكُتُب العربية، قام مؤلِّفه بجمع مادّته وانتخابها واختيارها والاعتناء بضبطها وطبعها ونشرها من الكتب التالية:
1- (تسلية الخواطر في منتخبات الملح والنوادر) لشاكر البتلوني.
2- (الأغاني) لأبي الفرج الأصبهاني.
3- (السيرة النبوية) لابن هشام.
4- (تاريخ الرسل والملوك) للطبري.
5- (وفيات الأعيان وأنباء أبناء الزمان) لابن خلكان.
6- (القرآن الكريم).
7- (الجامع الصحيح) للبخاري.
8- (الآجُرّومية) لابن آجُرّوم محمد بن داود الصنهاجي.
والمُؤلِّف هو: المُستَشْرِقُ الألماني August Fischer أُوغَسْت فِيشَر (1282-1368ﻫ = 1865-1949م)، من أهل ليبسيك، اهتم بالأبحاث الخاصة بالتاريخ والفلسفة والفقه عند العرب والمسلمين، وتخصص في اللغات الشرقية في جامعة (هالّة)، وعمل أستاذاً فيها، ودرّس اللغة العربية في معهد اللغات الشرقية في برلين، وأصبح أميناً له، وأصبح فيما بعد مِنْ أعضاء مجمع فؤاد الأول للغة العربية بالقاهرة عند تأسيسه.
أشهر آثاره (معجم فيشر) قضى أربعين سنة في جمعه وترتيبه وإعداده للطبع، وله (زمام الغناء المطرب في النظم السائر في أقاصي المغرب)، وغيرهما.
