تولى الرئاسة بعد نهاية الحرب الباردة.
وهو زوج وزيرة الخارجية السابقة الأمريكية والمرشحة السابقة لانتخابات الرئاسة الأمريكية هيلاري كلينتون.
وهو يعد من الديمقراطيين الجدد، وتعد سياسته بخصوص اتفاق التجارة الحرة في أمريكا الشمالية.
عند تركه الرئاسة كان هناك فائض بالميزانية قدره 559 مليار دولار.
في فترة ولايته الثانية تمكن الجمهوريون من الوصول إلى الكونغرس بعد أكثر من 40 عاماً.
في فترة ولايته الثانية قام مجلس النواب باتهامه بالتزوير وإعاقة العدالة]، إلا أن مجلس الشيوخ برأه من هذه التهمة وأكمل فترة ولايته.
وبعد نهاية ولايته اتضح أن 70% من الأمريكين لا يتفقون مع هذه التهم (نيويورك تايمز في 21 ديسمبر 1998).
وعند مغادرته للرئاسة كان يحظى بنسبة تأييد بلغت 65%، وهي النسبة الأعلى من أي رئيس أمريكي بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية.
أسس بعد نهايه ولايته مؤسسة ويليام ج.
كلينتون لتعزيز الوقاية ضد الأمراض مثل العلاج والوقاية من مرض الأيدز.
في عام 2004، أصدر سيرته بعنوان "ماي لايف" وساهم في الحملة الرئاسية لزوجته هيلاري في عام 2008، كما ساهم في دعم باراك أوباما.
في عام 2009، سُمي المبعوث الخاص للأمم المتحدة إلى هايتي، وبعد مصيبة الزلال التي ضربت هيتي في 2010، تعاون مع جورج بوش لتشكيل دعم مالي لصالح هايتي.
متزوج من هيلاري كلينتون وله بنت وحيدة هي تشيلسي كلينتون.
