"جميلات العرب كما خلدهن الشعراء" كتاب يوضح كيف تجلت المرأة في الأدب العربي، وخاصة عند الشعراء على مرّ العصور، فالمرأة تمثلت في أخيلة الشعراء واستولت على مشاعر الأدباء، فأنطقتهم بروائع الأشعار وطرائف الأدب هياماً بها وحنيناً إليها وافتناناً في وصفها وتصويراً لمحاسنها.
وفي هذا الإطار يكشف الكتاب كيف بدأ أدب الجواري في المشرق؛ إذ كان تأديب الجواري حرفة، وتثقيفهن صنعة، وتهيئتهن لإمتاع العقول والأرواح وسيلة مقصودة وغاية منشودة ... ولم يكن حظ الحرائر بأقل من خط الجواري في الحرص على التزود من المعرفة، ولم يحل الرجال بينهن وبين أن يبلغن من العلم والأدب ما يردن ... هذا في المشرق، وأما في المغرب فقد كان حظ المرأة في الأندلس من التحرر أكثر من أختها في المشرق، فبرز نشاطها بفنون مختلفة. وقد اعجب الشعراء بكل هذا، فسعوا إلى الحسن وشاركوا النساء نشاطهن الأدبي وبرزت أشعارهم من وحيها وفي كنفها.
تلك هي الحساسية للجمال، وهي التي دفعت الشعراء يترصدون الجميلات ويتتبعونهن، ويكتبون فيهن أجمل الأشعار. وهو بالذات ما يفرد له مؤلف هذا الكتاب "خازن عبود" صفحات كتابه الموسوم بـ "جميلات العرب" فيجمع لنا أشعار عمر بن أبي ربيعة، والعرجي، وجميل بثينة، والحارث بن خالد وآخرون من العصر الجاهلي وصدر الإسلام وفي العصور العباسية والأندلسية. كان لسلطان الجمال على أشعارهم أثر واضح، فبرزت سلمى ودعد وهند وليلى وفاطمة ورباب وسعدى وغيرهن ممن حفلت بهن دواوين شعرائنا منذ الجاهلية حتى العصر الحديث.
