إنَّ السؤال الذي طرحه الأستاذ ميشيل عفلق عن الوحدة العربية لم يأت به من فراغ، وإنما هو نتيجة منطقية لمراقبة حركة التاريخ العربي في ماضيه وحاضره، وإستفساره عن مكانة الوحدة العربية في حركة التاريخ هذه وإمكانية تحقيقها ما دامت مالكة لشروطها الموضوعية والذاتية.
نقول قولنا هذا إبتداءً من أجل أن نبيّن أن الأستاذ جعل من الوحدة العربية الهدف الأول والأساس للعرب وربطه بالحرية والإشتراكية.
وقال بوجود العلاقة العضوية والجدلية بين الوحدة العربية وكل من الحرية والإشتراكية بحيث يشكل أحد هذه الأهداف مقدمة للآخر ونتيجة؛ وللأستاذ أسبابه في هذا الربط من أجل أن يؤكد أن الوحدة تمثل حالة راهنية في الحياة العربية، وهي إن كانت تتعايش مع الحرية والإشتراكية، بمستويات من التلازم، فإنها هي المتسع الحقيقي للحرية والإشتراكية وبدونها لا يمكن للحرية أن تأخذ حقها كاملاً وكذلك الإشتراكية.
والوحدة بسؤالها تظل على هذه السيرورة لأنها حقيقة واقعية كامنة وظاهرة في الحياة العربية، فإذا هي لم تتحقق اليوم أو في الغد القريب فإن إمكانات تحققها في المستقبل ممكنة وقائمة لأنها، كما يراها الأستاذ، ساكنة في عمق الحياة العربية، في ماضيها وحاضرها ومستقبلها، وستظل ساكنة ومستمرة ما دامت مالكة لممكناتها حتى تصبح القوى الوحدوية قادرة على فرض إرادتها في عودة الأمة إلى ذاتها في الوحدة لأنها، في رأيه، تمثل حقيقتها.
